Generally speaking, it’s always a good idea to find out what kind of work they have done in the past and whether they have any testimonials or past customers you could talk to. Renovations are complex and require many specialists, so consider choosing a reliable project manager who can be your one point of contact.
This should give you a broad overview, but to try and ensure that your renovation is going to run smoothly and will be handled professionally, here are some specific questions you should ask potential builders or renovation project managers: Do they offer a full design and build renovation service? Do they offer a full project management service and does this include one point of contact for the duration of the project? How do they manage unexpected issues that may arise – do they have a process to handle this?
Its important to be dealing with people you can trust and who deliver on what they promise. Good renovation experts will have processes in place for this reason. Ask them: Do they provide a comprehensive building contract? What insurances do they have in place should something go wrong? Do they offer an independent loss of deposit and completion guarantee? Will they offer a fixed price quotation and a guaranteed completion date?
What do they have in place in terms of managing health and safety? What sub-contractors do they use and are they licensed? What suppliers are they associated with and are they reputable? Can I see myself working with this company and the people in it – do I like them/get along with them/trust them?
Being observant in your few interactions with a renovation specialist will tell you a lot about what you can expect. Ask yourself: Have they listened to me and showed that they understand what’s important to me? Have they done what they said they would – called back on time, turned up on time? Have they appeared honest and transparent? Has the communication been good so far?
If you have a good impression and have had all these questions answered to your satisfaction, you’re well underway to an exciting and rewarding renovation experience.
