In this article, we check out the costs involved in installing a swimming pool.

Nothing says summer like a Saturday barbeque followed by a dip in the pool. But is this an achievable aspiration? In this article, we check out the costs involved in installing a swimming pool.

How much do above-ground vinyl pools cost?

A common choice due to their affordability and easy-installment, above-ground swimming pools are an attractive option for those who are working within a budget. However, be warned - these initially affordable pools don’t come with the same level of durability as alternative options, and they are high-maintenance. Sharp objects can easily damage vinyl swimming pools, and changing the vinyl every 10 years is recommended.
If you are looking for an affordable, short-term option, vinyl may be your best choice. DIY options start from around $12,000 while professional installations start from around $35,000.

How much do in-ground fibreglass swimming pools cost?

Fibreglass swimming pools offer the best of both worlds. They are quick and easy to install, as well as durable and low-maintenance. Fibreglass is less likely to experience a build-up in algae, meaning fewer chemicals and cleaning products are required than a concrete swimming pool. The only drawback to fibreglass pools is that they do not offer the design freedom that comes with concrete - fibreglass comes in a limited range of styles and shapes.
If this style sounds like you, installation costs start from around $70,000.

How much do concrete swimming pools cost?

Because concrete swimming pools require a bespoke design and build, they are the most expensive choice. However, this means that they can be designed to perfectly complement your garden and property style. It is important to note that algae are more likely to build-up on concrete surfaces, so you will need to spend more on chemicals and cleaning products for a concrete pool. Concrete pools also usually require resurfacing after around 15 years.
If you are interested in a pool style that will offer plenty of creative-design freedom, concrete will be your best choice, starting from $75,000.

How much will it cost to maintain my swimming pool?

Once your swimming pool is installed, there are other costs to consider. This includes the costs of cleaning, heating, lighting and repairing your pool (costs start from around $1,500 annually), re-lining or resurfacing, pool covers, pool pumps, pool vacuums and chemical testing. In terms of long-term costs, fibreglass is recommended as the most cost-effective option as it requires minimal maintenance and heating.

What council regulations do I need to be aware of?

Each state has varying regulations surrounding swimming pool installations and registration. For advice on pool fencing height restrictions, boundary lines, pool registration and more, please contact your local renovation specialist.
