conservator renovation in Wellington

Previous Refresh customers Helen and Frank wanted to overhaul their outdated conservatory and enhance its indoor to outdoor flow. The outcome is a beautiful modern room filled with natural light and leading out to an extended patio area covered by a pergola.

The Initial Consultation

Helen and Frank’s home is situated in a stunning location overlooking Khandallah Park. They wanted an area where they could relax in the sunshine and enjoy the views all year round, while also improving their home’s indoor/outdoor flow.
They’d used Refresh Renovations in the past and found the process enjoyable and hassle-free. They got back in touch with their local Renovation Consultant, Lia Boersma, to discuss their ideas and explore what would be possible based on the budget they had available.

Expert Advice

Lia has many years of experience within the construction industry and prides herself on her ability to build strong relationships with clients. This enables her to get a thorough understanding of their aspirations and priorities, while also managing expectations.
She let Helen and Frank know what could be achieved with their original budget of $150,000. Unfortunately, this didn’t quite match what they had envisioned. Being honest with her clients at the outset avoided disappointment or unexpected costs further down the line. Frank and Helen confirmed they were happy to increase their budget by $20,000 to create their dream indoor to outdoor living area.
Given the project’s site and nature, Lia consulted an architect to produce detailed designs. Frank and Helen reviewed these, making some changes; once they were happy the plans were finalised.
The renovation required council building consent, but this was all taken care of by Refresh. Once consent had been granted, Lia got to work securing the necessary materials and contractors, and scheduling when everything, including a rebuild of the foundation slab, would take place.
Unfortunately, COVID-related delays meant the steel portal framing and windows would take longer than usual to arrive from the suppliers. Lia informed Helen and Frank of this immediately and gave them a revised estimate of how long the project would take to complete.

Getting To Work

Multiple tradespeople were needed to carry out the work, including builders, electricians, tilers, painters, and plumbers. Lia had scheduled when everyone was required on-site and kept the contractors updated over the supply delays. Their established working relationship with Refresh meant they were happy to be available when required.
Then wet weather adversely affected the site conditions, causing work to progress more slowly than planned. This is always a risk when undertaking outdoor renovation projects over the winter, and wasn’t entirely unexpected. Lia’s team worked hard to get the project delivered as efficiently as possible without compromising their excellent quality standards.

The Finished Result

For Frank and Helen, their stunning conservatory with its large doors opening to the newly built patio area is their dream come true. Natural light floods the room through generous windows, making it the perfect place to enjoy plenty of Khandallah sunshine.
Floor tiling from Tile Space runs from the conservatory into the backyard, creating a smooth flow between the inside and outdoors. The large slabs and light colour make the room feel open and spacious, and plenty of seating, plants, and a wall-mounted television add to the relaxed feel.
The old polycarbonate roof has been replaced with an engineered steel frame structure, creating a more modern appearance, and the white walls and ceiling add to the light and airy feel.
Outside, the size of the patio has been increased, and a pergola provides shade while complementing the rest of the property.

Final Thoughts

Helen and Frank now have a versatile space that can be used for relaxing, entertaining, or simply enjoying their beautiful view.
Once again, Lia’s clients have been impressed with the professionalism, exemplary communication, and high-quality workmanship provided by Refresh Renovations.
