Big Plans

Determined to drag their home out of the 1980s, homeowners Andrew and Diane wanted to make some big changes to the property but didn't know where to start.
As it was, the original layout made poor use of the space available and constricted flow. Ultimately, the homeowners wished to reconfigure the home into a more spacious arrangement that would provide a smoother indoor/outdoor transition. This renovation wouldn’t only transform the home’s complete atmosphere but also provide an excellent opportunity to modernise the interiors.
Additionally, the homeowners needed to address the home’s thermal efficiency issues and a water leak in the ensuite bathroom. Taking on this mighty task was local Renovation Consultants Jason and Michelle Zielinski, who led Andrew and Diane through the ins and outs of their home renovation, comprehensively managing everything from start to finish.

Concept Creation and Costing

Jason and Michelle began the concept creation process by determining what structural layout would best facilitate Andrew and Diane’s lifestyle and simultaneously establish better flow throughout the home. This design then became the basis for the cost evaluation.
During the process, the homeowners decided to focus primarily on internal works and made some slight adjustments to the project’s scope. With these amendments, the final cost estimate came to $200,000.

Construction Begins

This full home renovation ran smoothly over a five-month timeline, with the only hitch being a slight delay in supply delivery. Andrew, Diane, and their two girls moved out for the duration of the renovation, so the noisy demolition and building did not disrupt their daily lives.
As the project involved significant structural change, demolition was an intensive and intricate part of the process, which Jason managed carefully. The early stages entailed removing the kitchen, flooring, and brickwork to allow for new openings, followed by propping the ceiling to place brickwork and lintels for the new layout.
Jason’s talented team of specialist tradespeople then got to work on modernising the interiors. All windows and doors were upgraded to improve thermal efficiency, new plumbing and electrical wiring were installed for the new floor plan, and the majority of the home received a modern makeover.
Materials used in this home renovation include supplies from Top Shelf Cabinetry, Tiles Expo, Harvey Norman Commercial, Choices Flooring, and Beacon Lighting.

An Urban Kitchen

The new open-plan layout has made way for an exceptionally spacious kitchen. The interior has been redesigned with a natural colour scheme and features exposed timber cabinets, stone benchtops, and large grey floor tiles. These materials look beautiful in combination and establish a relaxed contemporary look suited to the home’s suburban surroundings.
Large sliding doors allow natural light to spill into the area, making the kitchen brighter and more connective with the outdoors. All the while, internal lighting upgrades – including the statement pendant lights – further contribute to the airy atmosphere.
The L-shaped format paired with a sizeable kitchen island has completely optimised the room’s functionality, which is significantly more practical than the original G-shape. Complete with ample cabinetry, stainless steel appliances, and a black splashback, the new kitchen is indeed equipped for the pace of modern living.

The Chic Lounge

The lounge has undergone a thorough redesign, transforming the 1980s interior into a clean, modern living room. Grey carpet, crisp white walls, and the black tiled fireplace combine for a simplistic yet stylish look that allows the exposed ceiling beams to have the attention they deserve. And despite how striking the white wicker pendant light is, the effects of this feature continue to draw your eyes to the ceiling.
Using a minimalist design was an excellent decision for this room. There was no reliance on unique textures or trending colours to make the lounge beautiful. Rather, the upgrade was all about enhancing what was already there.

A Relaxing Ensuite

Fresh-faced and considerably brighter, the ensuite has been renovated with a contemporary design that creates a soothing atmosphere. As the original layout worked perfectly, there was no need to move around fixtures. Instead, this bathroom was renewed from floor to ceiling with high-end upgrades.
White walls and grey floor tiles provide the perfect blank canvas for the new floating vanity, modern toilet, and frameless walk-in shower. Tied together by matte black hardware, the ensuite has become a sleek space to relax.

Completing the Full Home Renovation

While the kitchen, lounge, and ensuite were transformed with striking contemporary designs, the rest of the home was also renewed to establish cohesive, modern interiors. Additional improvements involved updating the laundry room for better functionality and upgrading flooring throughout the house.
Andrew and Diane now have a home that’s almost unrecognisable from its 1980s build. Bright, open, and spacious, the results have delivered everything the homeowners sought to achieve. Jason is just as proud of the project’s success and thinks each room looks fantastic.
