While you may occasionally feel as if the 1990s were just a few years ago, many homes built in this decade are already 30 years old! Hardworking bathrooms and kitchens are often tired, worn, and definitely looking dated. This was the case for Trudy, whose home in Stokes Valley needed a modern makeover.
Trudy hadn’t worked with Refresh before but was keen to engage an experienced project manager. So she contacted her local Renovation Consultant Jenelle Winstanley to arrange a free consultation and discuss her options.

The Refresh Process

Jenelle met with Trudy and listened to her goals. She wanted to modernise the family home by updating bathroom fixtures and fittings and create a more functional kitchen space that looked good too. Discussing budget expectations at the beginning of the process is vital for ensuring ideas and outcomes align. Trudy was happy to pay for whatever she needed to achieve her renovation goals, but wanted cost efficient options used to keep the project affordable.
Jenelle explained that with Refresh, detailed plans and budgets are always agreed on before any work begins. This clear understanding of expectations across both parties minimises the risk of any unwanted budget surprises once the renovation is in progress.

Concept Creation

Trudy envisaged a more modern kitchen that was user friendly, too. Jenelle's designer created a galley layout concept, where a long island would provide ample bench space while doubling as a breakfast bar. The room already benefited from natural light, but a mix of white and wood tones would keep the area looking warm and bright.
The bathrooms would also utilise classic white, this time with trendy black tapware and fittings to give it a contemporary feel. The family bathroom would have a toilet, tub and separate shower, with a toilet and shower in the en suite.
Jenelle tapped into her established network of trusted local professionals to schedule everything needed for Trudy’s renovation. From plumbers and painters to joiners and electricians, Jenelle expertly managed the entire project from design right through to delivery – including council consent – so everything was straightforward and stress-free for Trudy.

Modern Makeover

Jenelle’s team delivered carefully crafted renovations that have transformed Trudy’s home. The new galley kitchen is attractive and functional, with the subway tile backsplash, vinyl plank flooring, and wooden cupboards combining to give depth and texture to the space. A hideaway cupboard keeps the breakfast essentials tidy and out of sight, while white dish drawers, which are not very common but are starting to see a resurgence, blend in with the row of cupboards to create an integrated and seamless overall look.
The bathrooms feature back to wall toilets, wall hung vanities, and black framed showers. Black framed mirrors continue the contemporary look, while the free-standing bath is fitted against the wall to maximise space.

Final Thoughts

By renovating the dated bathroom and kitchen spaces, Trudy’s whole home feels refreshed. The use of black tapware and fittings in the bathrooms creates a contemporary feel when paired with classic white fixtures, and white paint keeps the rooms feeling bright and spacious.
The galley kitchen offers plenty of space, with the long breakfast bar and double oven making it perfect for entertaining. By mixing white cupboards with wood panel accents, the kitchen feels modern and interesting and a real reflection of Trudy’s tastes instead of being another ‘cookie cutter’ design.
Jenelle is thrilled with the renovation. “Trudy was very happy with the result, which is always our goal. The monochromatic bathrooms feel uber-modern, while the bright and spacious kitchen elevates the entire home.”
